Mechanical seals are a common sealing device used to prevent leakage of various fluids. The materials for mechanical seals usually include three aspects: sealing surface materials, spring materials, and sealing head materials. The sealing surface material is the main component of mechanical seals, which directly affects the anti leakage ability of mechanical seals. The widely used sealing surface materials currently include carbon materials, ceramic materials, metal materials, rubber materials, and polymer materials. These materials have their own characteristics and can be suitable for different mechanical seals according to different environmental conditions. For example, carbon materials have high cost-effectiveness and good wear resistance, but are not suitable for media such as strong acids and alkalis; Ceramic materials have excellent wear resistance and corrosion resistance, but their applicable temperature range is relatively narrow; Metal materials have good thermal conductivity and high-temperature strength, but they are prone to leakage due to the influence of surface foreign objects. Therefore, when selecting materials, it is necessary to comprehensively consider different factors and choose the most suitable material.

Spring materials are usually made of stainless steel, high-temperature alloys, and other materials, whose main function is to maintain the compression force of mechanical seals and keep the sealing surface in a tight state.

The sealing head material is used to fill the gaps between the sealing surfaces to enhance the sealing effect. Currently, the widely used sealing head materials include PTFE, flexible graphite, fiber cloth, etc.

The material selection of mechanical seals should not only be determined based on operating conditions, but also consider the impact on the environment and avoid using materials that cause significant environmental pollution. Good material selection not only benefits environmental protection, but also improves the working life and stability of mechanical seals.
